ISO 50001:2018 Energy management systems – requirements with guidance for use

ISO 50001:2018, the Energy Management System standard was published in August 2018. The standard defines a systematic approach for the improvement of energy performance within an organisation.

The standard specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system.

Establishing an EnMS requires the implementing company to:

·         Continually improve energy performance;

·         Define its energy policy;

·         Document the Energy Review;

·         Establish an energy baseline and identify EnPIs (Energy Performance Indicators);

·         Establish, implement and maintain Energy Objectives and Targets.

Most of the requirements of ISO 50001:2011 are continued in ISO 50001:2018. This is particularly the case for the more energy-specific elements and requirements. However, there are also some other energy specific changes embedded in the standard.

By far the biggest change to the standard is the incorporation of the Annex SL ‘high-level structure’, providing improved compatibility with other management system standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

The structure of ISO 50001:2018 is based on Annex SL format and terminology. Annex SL was developed to ensure that all ISO management system standards share a common format irrespective of the specific discipline to which they relate.
