IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management

Climate change mitigation and adaptation together with the unfolding biodiversity catastrophe pose the biggest challenges facing our society. Adapting our businesses and industries to meet this challenge requires new ways of working and significant upskilling. The IEMA Foundation Certificate offers a solid foundation in sustainability and the management tools to improve environmental performance and covers a wide range of environmental, sustainability and governance principles. This course also allows the learner the additional benefit of receiving Associate Membership of IEMA (AIEMA). There are no formal entry requirements for this course. The course consists of 40 hours of guided learning delivered over 5 days.

Who are the tutors?

Peter Fleming

Peter Fleming is an accomplished EHSQ professional with credible technical insight coupled with best-in-class interpersonal and communication skills. In the last 14 years, he has specialized in the areas of HAZOP, risk assessment, process safety, fire safety and industrial loss prevention. Peter Has worked with over 300 organizations in Europe, China, Middle East, America, Central America primarily focusing on HAZOP studies and Risk Assessment.

Currently, he has been coordinating a number of HAZOP and SIL studies in Jubail and Saudi Arabia. He has also worked as a safety expert responsible for assessing the safety of Ma’aden operations and processes and preparing a safety risk register for Ma’aden Phosphate Company. His work encompassed beneficiation, ammonia, 3 sulfuric acid, 3 phosphoric acid and 4 diammonium phosphate plants. He has also completed a number of HAZOP studies in Saudi Arabia and Qatar for a number of clients.


How will I be assessed?

There is a 1 hour open-book multiple-choice exam, which is completed online and on dates set by IEMA. Learners must achieve 70% to pass the course.

Programme accreditation

This course is certified by IEMA. IEMA is an international membership organisation, committed to global sustainability for everyone working, studying or interested in environment and sustainability.

On successful completion of this course the learner becomes eligible for Associate membership, giving them the AIEMA suffix and the benefits of IEMA membership, including networking opportunities, industry leading events and members-only magazine. Completion of the foundation certificate meets the entry requirements for the Certificate in Environmental Management leading to Practitioner membership.
