MS Project – Advanced

Delegates will learn how to use a variety of views, tables, filters, and reports within Microsoft Project Professional to analyse project data for a business. Delegates will use some of Project’s most useful features to control project costs and schedules. This course builds on both the Introduction and Intermediate Microsoft Project Courses to provide everything that a serious Project Planner needs to create and manage a project.

Managing projects through Project Central/Server (server based):

  • Set-up MS Project to use project central/server
  • Access project central/server through the project application or web browser
  • Navigate in project central/server
  • Set up status reports
  • Report on progress, respond to messages and status reports
  • Update individual projects through project central/server
  • Working with portfolios and creating new tasks in project central/server
  • Delegating tasks through project central/server
  • Administration of project central/server (set up views, access rights, accounts etc.)

Who should participate?

Delegates will get the most out of this course if they want to learn how to use Microsoft Office Project Professional extensively during a project. Delegates should ideally have come through the Introduction and Intermediate courses or be familiar with how to control a Microsoft Project Plan.

What will I learn?

Participants achieve the following learning outcomes from the programme;

  • Customise MS Project:
    • tables – use of custom fields for calculations
    • filters – editing filters, creation of filters based on other filters
    • forms – customising forms, adding group boxes and fields
    • report – project reports, task and resource reports, crosstab reports
    • toolbars and menu bar
  • Format graphical views
  • Define the global file and use of project organiser
  • Use and understand macros
  • Work with multiple files, setting up resource pools, viewing
  • Create project workspaces
  • Consolidate projects and insert a project into another project while linking tasks between projects
  • Copy Information to and from MS Project through the importing and exporting functionality
  • Use workgroup features (email) and send schedule notes to non-MS Project users
  • Notify resources of assignments, update the project and request status updates

Who are the tutors?

Liam Dillon

Liam Dillon specialises in Project Management and Program Management. Liam holds a Master of Science degree in Project Management and is one of the few practitioners to hold multiple project and program management accreditations (PMP®, PMI-ACP®, PMI-RMP®, PMI-SP® and PgMP®) from the Project Management Institute (PMI®). Liam has over 23 years’ professional experience. During that time, he has led some significant global IT and Infrastructure projects and programs for various industries.

Coupled with his industrial experience, Liam spends time training and coaching project managers in USA, Middle-East, Asia and Europe on the topic of project and program management. Liam has served as the President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI and has served as the Chairperson of PMI’s Global Board Volunteer Advisory Group. He has presented both at national and international conferences of the topic of project, program and portfolio management.


Louise Church

Louise Church is a Business and IT Consultant based in Dublin. Her main areas of expertise are in the areas of Business Development, IT Training Strategies and the development of IT Training Solutions for business.

Louise began her career in the technical department of UCD Computer Services. In 1980 she moved to Eukon Associates, a Dublin based Management & IT Consulting firm. In 1985 she co-founded OLAS a software training and development company. In Olas, Louise was responsible for the IT Training Division and acted as Sales and Marketing Director for the business.

OLAS grew to be one of the largest IT training & software development companies in Ireland, providing bespoke software development, eLearning solutions and training programmes to a wide range of customers including Government departments and large multinationals. In 2000, Olas were appointed as the SAP training centre for Ireland delivering SAP training to SAP’s international and local customers.

Louise has wide experience in the design and development of IT training solutions, training delivery and in the management of large training projects. She has also developed a number of elearning solutions for clients.
