Tutor Quote

Two quotes from W. Edwards Deming stand out to me as fundamentally true in professional life "A bad system will beat a good person every time” and “Where there is fear, there will be wrong figures”.

The former is particularly important when auditing management systems, auditors need to recognise we are auditing a system, not people. The latter relates to the importance of psychological safety for workers, who perform best when they feel secure enough to ask questions, share new ideas and admit mistakes without dreading punishment. Blaming individuals instead of improving the flawed system can create a toxic culture of fear and defensiveness.

News & UpdatesFact

Shane loves to cook, and it started almost by accident. While studying for a Masters, a guest lecture by Thomas Berry (a famous Cultural Historian & Environmental Thinker) on the links between food production, carbon emissions, and climate change completely changed how Shane thought about what he ate — he went vegetarian not long after, back in 1995, and has stuck with it ever since. Having to figure out what to actually cook is what turned him into someone who genuinely loves the process of cooking.
