What has changed, what stays familiar, and how to update your EMS without rebuilding it

Introduction

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

For people who already know ISO 14001:2015 and need to apply the 2026 changes

ISO 14001:2026 replaces the 2015 edition. If your environmental management system (EMS) already works, you don’t need to start again. This half-day workshop is for people who already know the existing standard and want a clear, practical explanation of what has changed, what stays familiar, and what their organisation should review during transition.

We compare the 2015 and 2026 editions side-by-side and separate the genuinely new or strengthened expectations from the editorial tidy-up. The revision is an evolution, not a redesign, but it is meaningful. Through practical examples and guided activities, we look at the stronger expectations on environmental context, risks and opportunities, planned change, external providers and measurable environmental performance, and turn them into proportionate actions for your existing EMS.

What's covered?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse
  • The revision at a glance. The purpose and scale of the 2026 revision, the transition timetable, and the core EMS principles that stay the same.
  • Context, interested parties and scope. Stronger consideration of climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem health, pollution and natural-resource availability, and what that means for interested parties, compliance obligations and EMS scope.
  • Planning and change. Revised planning requirements, including environmental aspects, emergency situations and clearer traceability of risks, opportunities and actions, plus the new requirement to plan and manage changes to the EMS.
  • Operational control and external providers. Stronger control of contractors, suppliers, outsourced processes and other external providers across the value chain.
  • Performance and improvement. Greater emphasis on analysing environmental performance, measurable outcomes and EMS effectiveness, with updates to internal audit programmes, management review and continual improvement.
  • Gap analysis and transition planning. Using gap analysis to update affected processes without rewriting arrangements that already work.

Who should participate?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

This course is for people who already work with ISO 14001:2015 and need to understand the revised requirements and what they mean for transition, including:

  • Environmental managers, officers and EMS coordinators
  • ISO 14001 internal auditors, lead auditors and audit programme managers
  • Quality, health and safety, compliance and integrated management system personnel
  • Sustainability professionals, consultants and implementation specialists

What will I learn?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and scale of the revision, and which requirements remain substantially unchanged
  • Describe the key changes affecting context, interested parties, EMS scope and environmental planning
  • Explain the new requirement to plan changes and what it means in practice for an existing EMS
  • Assess how the revised requirements affect environmental aspects, risks and opportunities, external providers and operational controls
  • Identify evidence that demonstrates environmental performance, effective internal auditing and meaningful management review
  • Tell substantive changes apart from clarification, relocation or restructuring of existing requirements
  • Complete a focused gap analysis and prioritise the actions needed for transition to ISO 14001:2026

What are the entry requirements?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

You should already know ISO 14001:2015. Because the course involves comparing clause wording, taking part in transition activities and preparing practical actions for an existing EMS, you’ll also need a good standard of written and spoken English.

How do we train and support you?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse
  • Course materials that support your transition planning after the session
  • Access to experienced practitioners who can deal with real transition questions and challenges
  • Small groups, limited to approximately 12 learners, so everyone gets time and attention
  • On-site or live virtual delivery for teams, and scheduled live virtual public courses for individuals

In-Company delivery

For In-Company courses, there will be a pre-course conversation to understand your current EMS and your transition priorities. We tailor the workshop to your current ISO 14001:2015 EMS, your sector, your certification arrangements and your transition timetable. Where it helps, exercises can use your own material, such as your context analysis, interested-parties register, EMS scope, aspects register, change-management arrangements, supplier controls, performance measures, audit programme and management review documentation. We build in site-specific detail, so the day reflects how your organisation actually works.

How can you progress?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

This course brings your existing ISO 14001 knowledge up to date with the 2026 edition and supports practical transition planning. From here, you could move on to ISO 14001 Internal Auditor, ISO 14001 Implementation, ISO 14001 Lead Auditor, integrated management systems training or Environmental Legislation workshops.
