NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

The NEBOSH approved International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety provides an unrivalled opportunity to demonstrate competence in Health and Safety issues relevant to your place of work. This course has been designed to provide an appropriate breadth of underpinning knowledge for non-specialists in occupational health and safety working in an international context, to enable them to discharge more effectively their organisational duties or functions with respect to workplace health and safety. It has been designed for managers, supervisors, employee representatives and others who require a basic knowledge and understanding of occupational health and safety.

The course consists of 3 units:

Unit IGC1 Management of international health and safety
Unit GC2 Controlling Workplace Hazards
Unit CG3 International health and safety practical application

The course consists of 10 days intensive training to give candidates a good grounding in health and safety and prepare candidates for the NEBOSH International General Certificate examinations. Extensive training materials are provided for the course. The taught element of the course is 80 hours but candidates need to further undertake a minimum of 53 hours private study.

Assessment of this course consist of two written papers (IGC1 and GC2) and a practical assessment (GC3). The pass rate for our SQT delegates have always been well in excess of NEBOSH averages. Here is a link to our results page.

The International Certificate course syllabus covers International legal frameworks and codes of practice but in addition our SQT course also covers Irish legislation. Other centres in Ireland run the National Certificate which is based on UK legislation. We recommend that prospective delegates satisfy themselves as to which legislation is most relevant to their own/their company’s needs. Successful completion of the Certificate will allow you gain direct access to the NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. SQT is the only Irish NEBOSH accredited provider to present both NEBOSH Certificate and Diploma courses.

For applicants whose first language is not English, NEBOSH recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent). It is important to note that learners are not expected to have an IELTS or equivalent examination complete. Potential delegates are expected to self-assess their English language competency against the IELTS Band scores which can be found in this document.

Certificate students need to register with a NEBOSH approved centre to sit their exams. (SQT is a NEBOSH Approved Centre 551).

The assessment process for delegates consists of an examination (2 papers; IGC1 and GC2), both of which are taken on the same day and each lasts 2 hours. In addition there is a practical health and safety assessment of a workplace, (GC3). Delegates must achieve the pass standard in both examination papers and in the practical assessment to be awarded the International General Certificate. There are two NEBOSH examinations dates; June and December. Please note that NEBOSH have a Policy and procedures for access arrangements, reasonable adjustments and special consideration.

Unit GC3 is carried out in the delegate’s own workplace. The aim of the practical assessment is to test your ability to complete a health & safety assessment of a workplace. It requires you to carry out, unaided, a safety inspection of a workplace, and then prepare a report that persuasively urges management to take appropriate action.

The NEBOSH International General Certificate is accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority Accreditation (SQA Accreditation – www.sqa.org.uk) for delivery across the UK. It is rated within the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF - www.scqf.org.uk) at SCQF Level 6 with 15 SCQF credit points. The Irish awarding bodies and qualifications authorities and the UK awarding and qualifications regulatory bodies undertook an exercise to facilitate the comparison of qualifications in the qualifications framework in the UK and Ireland. The document, Qualifications can cross boundaries - a rough guide to comparing qualifications in the UK and Ireland was published, and compares SCQF Level 6 to Level 5 on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications. In addition there is a recently launched European-wide website: http://ec.europa.eu/eqf/compare/uk-s/ie_en.htm#comparison, which supports this comparison of different national education systems.

Holders of the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technician membership (Tech IOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH – www.iosh.co.uk) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM – www.iirsm.org).
