The IEMA Pathways to Net Zero course provides clear and consistent guidance on best practice on transitioning to Net Zero.

Climate change and nature collapse are existential crises. Ignoring them will not make them go away. This comprehensive course aims to provide important information for sustainability and environmental leaders with a strategic and operational overview of decarbonisation and climate action as it affects their specific industry and work activities. The course seeks to enable participants to play their part in meeting the “rapidly closing window to secure a liveable future”.

On completion of this course, a learner will be able to:

  • Appreciate the underlying climate science driving the net zero agenda
  • Understand the main international and Irish policy context and drivers for responding to the climate crisis
  • Explain the business and environmental benefits of low carbon goods and services
  • Learn how to establish a greenhouse gas inventory across all three GHG emission scopes
  • Understand the main principles of greenhouse gas accounting (including using activity data and emission factors)
  • Understand what carbon neutral means and its application for organisations, products and services
  • Learn how to establish science-based targets (methodologies) and a net zero strategy (near- and long-term targets)
  • Implement a decarbonisation plan with suitable targets and milestones to deliver on a science-based target and/or net zero objective
  • Explain how to reduce greenhouse emissions which organisations influence but do not control directly (Scope 3)
  • Learn how to communicate externally about responses to the climate crisis, net zero and making robust green claims

Who should participate?

This course is aimed at persons who might be:

  • responsible for developing a net zero approach (or other carbon reduction strategy) for their organisation
  • supporting an existing net zero strategy
  • an environmental/sustainability specialist with net zero as a new responsibility
  • responsible for communicating or helping to communicate an organisation’s net zero approach
  • responsible for decarbonising a particular part of an organisation, e.g., supply chain, business travel, estates, etc.

How will I be assessed?

This course is IEMA certified.  Certificates are provided by IEMA to learners who have successfully completed the course assessment.

The assessment consists of an online 20-question multiple-choice test.   The test is completed through the IEMA assessment portal and candidates are sent a link upon registration to the assessment.  Assessments must be completed within a prescribed timeframe.   Learners must achieve 70% to pass the course.
